THE PARAMOUNT FAST - ጾመ ገሃድ
Why: During this fast we commemorate how God's triune nature was revealed to the world during the baptism of Christ.
When: One day during or before Theophany (baptism of Christ) and one day before nativity.
Fast of advent - ጾመ ነብያት
Why: Many prophets fasted in preparation to receiving Christ, similarly Moses fasted forty days before receiving the Ten commandments. Similar to the Prophets we fast in preparation for receiving Christ as Christmas is approaching.
Fast of the dormition of the mother of god - ጾመ ፍልሰታ
Why: The body of the Virgin Mary was assumed into heaven upon her death and the apostles did not have the opportunity to give her a customary honorary burial. The apostles started this fast to accomplish this delicate task. The fasting period is used to ask for the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
Fast of the apostles - ጶመ ሃዋርያት
Why: After the disciples received the Holy Spirit they fasted in preparation for their ministry before going out to the world to deliver the message of the gospel. We fast in recognition of our responsibilities to minister and deliver the same message we have received "Christ has risen from the dead".
When: Fast occur in the summertime; beginning the day after Pentecost and ends on the feast of St. Peter and St. Paul (July 12). Since the day of Pentecost can vary the fast can last between two to six weeks.
